Shaped and Custom-Cut Cards

A rectangle is the easy shape, not the only one. What the factory can actually cut, and what it costs you in time.

A standard rectangle is the easiest card to imagine, but it is not the only shape available. Shaped and custom-cut cards, along with epoxy keychains in their own forms, are part of the range, which means a tap card does not have to be a plain rectangle. A card can follow a logo, a theme or a simple silhouette and still carry the same chip or printed code inside. This article looks at what shaped and custom-cut cards are, what you need to prepare before ordering, and how artwork should be handled so the shape and the print work together.

What shaped and custom-cut means

A shaped card is cut to a shape other than the usual rectangle. A custom-cut card follows a line decided for that order. Both can carry an NFC chip, whether NTAG213 with 144 bytes, NTAG215 with 504 bytes or NTAG216 with 888 bytes, or a printed dynamic QR code, and either route leads to a link that is written into the tag or the code. The shape is a design choice; the function underneath stays the same. Epoxy keychains are also available in their own forms, so a shape can be carried on a ring instead of kept in a wallet.

Preparing artwork

Every product can be custom printed, and a shaped card rewards careful artwork. Before ordering, it helps to decide the shape first and then fit the design inside it. A few points to keep in mind:

  • Keep the logo and important text away from the cut edge.
  • Keep the design simple enough to read at the size of the card.
  • Leave a clear area for a printed code if you want a scannable option.
  • Remember that both sides may be printed, so plan the back as well.

Working to these points from the beginning saves adjustments later, when changes are harder to make.

The cut line and the margin

When a card is cut to a shape, the artwork that matters should sit comfortably inside the outline. Text placed too close to the edge may look fine on screen but can be trimmed or clipped on the finished card. Leaving a band of plain background around the important elements keeps a logo or a headline safe, whatever the final shape turns out to be. It is worth building that margin into the design from the start rather than trying to correct it at the end.

It also helps to look at the shape at the size it will actually be made. A detail that reads clearly on a large screen can disappear on a small card, and a very thin feature can end up fragile in the hand. Viewing the artwork at print size is a quick way to catch a shape that looks charming in theory but clumsy once it is scaled down.

Printing and finish

Because every product can be custom printed, a shaped card can carry the same colours and style as the rest of your materials. It is worth keeping one set of colours and one version of the logo across the whole order, so a shaped card sits comfortably beside a plain one and a keychain. If you are new to sending files for printing, the customization page explains what to include. The formats available, including shaped and custom-cut cards, are listed on the products page.

Before you send a file

It also helps to check the design against where the card will be used. A shape that works on a counter may not suit a keyring, and a design that reads clearly on a table may be too detailed for a small adhesive tag. Every product in the range is ordered in a minimum of 100 pcs, so it is worth settling the shape, the print and the destination before the run begins. Getting those three decisions right up front keeps the whole order simple.

If the same artwork has to work on more than one format, it is worth testing it on the smallest and the largest before deciding. A design that holds up on a keychain and on a large card is one that will not need to be redrawn later, and keeping a single version of the logo means the whole order stays consistent. The products page is a good place to compare the formats side by side.

If you are not sure which shape suits your idea, or how to prepare artwork for a cut edge, it is worth asking before you order. The team is happy to help on WhatsApp at +86 151 0247 7198 or by email at nina@cwtape.com.
